A Little About the Strong Man in Our Lives

“No one can enter a strong man’s house and plunder his goods, unless he first binds the strong man. Then indeed he may plunder his house.” (Mark 3:27)

Let’s talk a little about the “strong man” Jesus mentions in Mark 3. In this passage, Jesus is giving us insight into spiritual warfare using a simple parable. The “strong man” here represents Satan or demonic powers having influence over the world and its inhabitants, holding people captive through sin and deception.

Breaking down the Parable Further

The Strong Man = Satan or any demonic spirit that controls an area of a person’s life.

The House = Symbolizes the world or a person’s life, body, or heart under the influence or control of Satan

The Goods = Represents the people, or areas of life, held in bondage (captive by sin and darkness) like lust, anger, sickness, pride, fear, shame, rejection, addiction, etc.

Jesus and the Strong Man:

Jesus was explaining that He came to bind Satan to overpower the strong man so He could set the captives free (Isaiah 61:1, Luke 4:18). Through His death and resurrection, Jesus took back the authority that Satan had stolen from mankind. Now, Jesus gives that same authority to His disciples, that includes you, if you’re a believer walking in obedience and faith.

The Power of Jesus in Us:

Mark 3:27 isn’t just a spiritual story, it’s a practical message of victory. It shows:

  • Jesus has authority over Satan.
  • We, as believers, share in that authority. But we must first submit to God before we can resist the devil.
    (See James 4:7)

Luke 10:18-19 backs this up:

“I saw Satan fall like lightning from heaven. Behold, I have given you authority to trample on snakes and scorpions and over all the power of the enemy, and nothing shall by any means harm you.”

Jesus gave His disciples authority over demonic powers, and He gives that same authority to us today, but it comes with conditions: we must walk in holiness, submission, and truth.

What Are Some of These “Goods” That Need Delivering?

These include

  • Emotional issues: fear, rejection, depression, anger, anxiety
  • Mental torment: confusion, doublemindedness, suicidal thoughts
  • Physical manifestations: many autoimmune diseases, chronic pain, unexplained illness
  • Spiritual struggles: lust, rebellion, bitterness, addiction, pride, stubbornness

These are often rooted in sin which opens the door and gives a legal right to the enemy to access to our lives.

How Did All This Start?

Sin.
Sin gave Satan the legal right to attack us, our spirit, soul (mind, will, emotions), and body.

“The thief comes only to steal and kill and destroy. I came that they may have life and have it abundantly.” (John 10:10)

Satan wants to destroy us not just physically, but spiritually, by dragging us to hell with him (Rev. 20:10–15). But God in His infinite mercy sent His only begotten Son to redeem us as seen in Romans 5:8

“But God demonstrates His own love for us in this: While we were still sinners, Christ died for us.”

So What Now?

Because of Jesus:

  • We’re no longer powerless (Luke 10:18).
  • We can bind the strong man in our lives (Matt.18:18 ) because of Jesus’s victory over Satan through his death and resurrection, freeing humanity from his powers (i.e. plundering his house)
  • We can cast down strongholds (2 Cor. 10:4-5).
  • We can walk in freedom, but we have to engage the enemy, not ignore him.

“Cursed is he who does the work of the Lord deceitfully and cursed is he who keeps back his sword from blood.”  (Jeremiah 48:10)

This simply means don’t sit back and be passive, spiritual warfare is serious.

What You Can Do:

  • Start learning how to recognize the strongman and his works in your life.
  • Go through biblical deliverance to be set free.
  • Walk in holiness and obedience to stay free.
  • Know your authority in Christ (Luke 10:19; John 14:12–14; Matthew 18:18).

Realize, it is not a passive role that we are to be operating in as soldiers in the army of the Lord Jesus Christ, but an active one where as believers, we are called upon (commanded) to engage the enemy in all our spiritual warfare exercises (Jeremiah 48 :10), in order to free ourselves from impatience, anger, lust, autoimmune diseases, fears, self-hate, rejection, bitterness, rebellion, stubbornness, sicknesses, diseases and so many more.

We’ll soon give you more detailed lessons on the strongholds ( strong men) that operate in different areas of your life and how to break free from them in order to walk in Victory.

Some Encouragement:

This passage (Mark 3:27) is not just about Satan’s power it’s about Jesus’ greater power, and what He gives to us through salvation. You can be free, and you can stay free. But it takes truth, action, and a life submitted to Christ.

Those who believe in him and who are willing to live a consecrated and holy life, separated completely from the ways of this evil world. (1 John 5:19; 1 John 2: 15 – 17; 2 Corinthians 4: 4; Revelations 12:9)

It’s a message of hope and redemption emphasizing that through Jesus’s victory over evil (Satan), made possible by his resurrection power.

Jesus’s death and resurrection not only freed humanity from Satan’s power but the Lord is granting this authority and power of His over the enemy, Satan, to all those who would become his disciples.
