Purifying Your Home: Removing What Doesn’t Belong
Sometimes, items in our homes or lives can carry spiritual influence positive or negative depending on their origin and purpose. The Bible teaches us to be spiritually discerning and to remove anything that might hinder our fellowship with God or open the door to spiritual oppression. This isn’t about superstition or fear it’s about freedom, holiness, and living in alignment with God’s will.
If you suspect that something in your possession may not be pleasing to the Lord whether it’s an object associated with false religion, witchcraft, the occult, or any unholy practice this teaching will help guide you through prayerful steps to cleanse your home and heart. The goal is not panic, but peace; not fear, but freedom. In order to achieve this you will have to throw away items that may be cursed.
Ask the Holy Spirit to show you what needs to go so you can cleanse your home. With the help of the Lord, you can take action to restore your home as a sanctuary filled with His presence.
Biblical Foundations:
- “Do not bring a detestable thing into your house or you, like it, will be set apart for destruction. Regard it as vile and utterly detest it, for it is set apart for destruction.” (Deuteronomy 7:26)
- “Many of those who believed now came and openly confessed what they had done. A number who had practiced sorcery brought their scrolls together and burned them publicly.” (Acts 19:18–19)
- “Let us purify ourselves from everything that contaminates body and spirit, perfecting holiness out of reverence for God.” (2 Corinthians 7:1)
- “My people are destroyed for lack of knowledge.” (Hosea 4:6)
Suggested Prayer:
Lord Jesus, I ask for Your forgiveness for anything in my home that is not of You. Please reveal, by the Holy Spirit, anything that needs to be removed or destroyed. Teach me how to walk in spiritual discernment and help me to honor You with everything in my life and home. Let Your peace and presence fill my space. Amen.
Steps to Cleanse or Remove Spiritually Defiled Objects
Some physical items can carry spiritual defilement especially if they are linked to occult practices, false worship, or spiritual darkness. These objects can serve as entry points for demonic influence in your home or life. The goal of this process is not fear, but freedom in Christ.
Step 1: Identify and Remove Defiled Objects
As believers, we are called to make no room for the enemy in our lives or homes (Ephesians 4:27). Certain objects may carry spiritual baggage or open doors to demonic influence. Ask the Holy Spirit to guide you as you go through your home with prayer and discernment.
Here is a list of items that are commonly associated with spiritual defilement or occult influence.
- Books, media, or objects linked to occult practices or dark spiritual themes, including Satanism, witchcraft, or demonic imagery.
- Items connected to sinful or spiritually oppressive activity from previous residents or property owners.
- Disturbing paranormal manifestations such as unexplained knocking or movement (often associated with poltergeists).
- Figurines or artwork featuring owls, frogs, or other animals often used as occult symbols.
- Masks, charms, or objects used in traditional witchcraft or spiritual rituals, including fetishes and amulets from witch doctors.
- Idols or artifacts dedicated to false gods or spirits, even if they are considered cultural or decorative.
- Ouija boards, tarot cards, and any tools used for divination or contacting spirits.
- Statues or images representing gods or goddesses from other religions, especially where worship or reverence is involved.
- Items used in the worship of other deities or demonic spirits, including incense burners dedicated to false gods.
- Objects associated with astrology, horoscopes, fortune-telling, and Eastern mysticism, such as Buddha statues, sun gods, or hand-carved ritual items from various cultures. Also avoid books or materials promoting false spiritual practices or cult teachings (e.g., New Age, Christian Science, Jehovah’s Witnesses, metaphysics).
- Jewelry or gifts from individuals involved in witchcraft, or jewelry intended as talismans or good-luck charms. This includes hex signs, mystic symbols, or occult motifs.
- Symbols with known occult or pagan origins, such as the Egyptian ankh, peace symbol (broken cross), the Italian horn, evil-eye charms, or statues intended to “protect” or “bless” a home outside of Christ.
- Items that carry hidden or embedded curses, such as cursed objects or products tied to occult activity (discernment and Holy Spirit guidance are essential here).
- Dolls, puppets, or effigies used in occult rituals, or that have been prayed over for unholy purposes.
- Books, symbols, literature, or decorative items from false religions, occult traditions, or spiritualism, even if kept for curiosity or academic purposes.
- Second-hand items, including cars, homes, and furniture, may carry spiritual residue from previous owners involved in heavy occult practices or habitual sin.
The best course of action is to destroy these objects (Deuteronomy 7:25–26). If you cannot destroy an item because it doesn’t belong to you, anoint it with oil and pray over it in the name of Jesus.
A Prayerful Reminder:
“You shall burn the carved images of their gods with fire… Nor shall you bring an abomination into your house, lest you be doomed to destruction like it.”
— Deuteronomy 7:25-26
This process is not about fear, but freedom. Removing defiled objects is a step of obedience and devotion to Christ. Ask the Lord to show you what does not belong and trust Him to lead you into greater peace and protection in your home.
Step 2: Break Prayers and Curses Not Directed to the True God
Any prayer directed to someone or something other than God the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit is not received by God, it is considered worship to demons (1 Corinthians 10:20). These counterfeit prayers may result in spiritual bondage or curses.
If you know or suspect that demonic prayers, rituals, or curses have been directed against you or your household, break them out loud in the name of Jesus.
Step 3: Conduct the Cleansing Prayerfully and Boldly
We recommend that at least two believers go through the home or space together, armed with the Word of God and in prayerful agreement (Matthew 18:19–20).
As you walk through the home:
- Verbally renounce Satan and his influence.
- Declare your authority in Christ as a believer, purchased by the blood of Jesus (Luke 10:19; Revelation 12:11).
- Claim your home for the Lord and invite the Holy Spirit to dwell fully in every room and object.
Step 4: Use Scripture and Anointing Oil
Read Scripture aloud in the home as you pray through each room. Helpful passages include:
- Revelation 12:11
- Colossians 2:14–15
- Galatians 3:13
- Numbers 23:8, 23
- Joshua 6:18
- Proverbs 3:33
Anoint doorposts, windowsills, and entry points with olive oil (symbolic of the Holy Spirit), praying in the name of Jesus. You may also anoint specific objects or areas where you have sensed spiritual activity. Speak blessings over the home and reject every demonic presence.
Prayer to Activate the Anointing Oil (Excerpts)
By Dr. Apostle Grace
In Yeshua’s name I activate this oil. It no longer is straight olive oil but the blood of Yeshua of Nazareth. I activate it with the power of the living God, The Holy Spirit, the anointing power of Yeshua. Everywhere it’s placed or to whomever I place this upon, it will bring healing, deliverance and cleansing by your Holy Spirit Yeshua. I claim it now in your name. Thank you, Yeshua. Thank you.
Biblical Steps to Spiritually Cleanse Your Home
“You shall have no other gods before Me.” (Exodus 20:3)
Worshiping other gods whether knowingly or unknowingly through idols, rituals, or cursed objects is considered spiritual adultery in Scripture. Just as we would not tolerate unfaithfulness in a covenant relationship, God calls us to purity in our walk with Him.
The following five steps will guide you in spiritually cleansing your home and life:
1. Forgiveness and Repentance Prayer (Five-Way Forgiveness)
Begin by walking through a prayer of forgiveness:
- You forgive your ancestors, descendants, and others who may have opened spiritual doors in your life.
- Ask God to forgive and bless them, especially with salvation.
- Ask God to forgive you and forgive yourself especially for any sins committed against your own body.
- Repent for any form of spiritual adultery, such as participation in false religions, occult practices, or reliance on anything other than God.
2. Break Curses and Ungodly Soul Ties
In the name of Jesus:
- Break generational curses passed through your family line.
- Break any ungodly soul ties to people, places, or practices.
- Cancel the power of psychic prayers, religious rituals (including those not in alignment with biblical truth), and any words spoken over you that are not from God.
3. Remove or Renounce Defiled Objects
Ask the Holy Spirit to show you any items in your possession that are spiritually compromised. This could include books, images, jewelry, or cultural artifacts linked to false worship, witchcraft, or darkness.
- If you own the object: remove and destroy it.
- If you do not own it: anoint it with oil and pray over it, breaking its power in Jesus’ name.
4. Anoint and Pray Through Your Home
Using olive oil as a symbol of the Holy Spirit:
- Anoint doorframes, windows, and every room in your home.
- Speak the name of Jesus and command any unclean spirit to leave.
- Invite the Holy Spirit to fill and sanctify your home.
5. Deliverance Prayer for Yourself and Others
Finally, pray for deliverance from any demonic spirits that may have entered through cursed objects, unrepented sin, or generational influences.
Prayer to Pray While Cleansing Your Home
Lord Jesus, I come to You in faith, asking for Your help in cleansing my life and home. I renounce all cursed objects, and any demonic presence attached to them. I forgive my ancestors, descendants, and anyone who has spiritually influenced me. I ask You to forgive and bless them, especially with salvation. Please forgive me, and I forgive myself especially for any form of spiritual adultery. I also forgive those who have cursed me, and I repent of any curses I have spoken. In the name of Jesus, I break every curse, soul tie, psychic prayer, and ungodly spiritual connection. Show me what must be removed from my home and life. I anoint this house with oil, drive out every evil spirit, and dedicate this home to Your glory. In Jesus’ powerful name I pray. Amen.
Final Thoughts:
This is not about superstition. It is about honoring the Lord in your home and removing anything that could give the enemy a legal foothold. As you go through this process, expect peace, clarity, and freedom to increase.
