Foundational Questions of Faith: Why Jesus Came and What It Means for Us
Q1. Why did Jesus come to Earth?
Most people say, “Jesus came to save us.” That’s true but it’s only part of the story.
The Bible says in 1 John 3:8, “The Son of God appeared for this purpose, to destroy the works of the devil.”
When Adam and Eve sinned, darkness, fear, sickness, and death entered the world. Everything that was good became broken. But Jesus came to fix what sin destroyed. He came to bring us back to God and to set us free from the power of evil.
The Bible shows us that Jesus:
- Crushed Satan’s power (Genesis 3:15)
- Took back what the enemy had stolen (Colossians 2:15)
- Defeated death and brought eternal life (2 Timothy 1:10)
- Gave His followers power over the enemy (Luke 10:19)
So yes, Jesus came to save us, but also to restore us. He came to make us whole and to give us back the authority we lost through sin.
But if Jesus already won, why do we still feel like we’re in a battle?
Q2. If Satan is defeated, why do we still struggle?
That’s a question many people ask. If Jesus defeated Satan, why do we still face so much temptation, fear, or emotional and physical struggle?
Here’s the truth: the devil has been defeated, but he’s still active until his final judgment (Revelation 20:10). He’s like a criminal who’s been sentenced but is still causing trouble until his punishment is carried out.
He has no real power over believers, but he uses deception, lies, fear, and temptation to make us think we’re still powerless.
Many Christians struggle because:
- They don’t know what the Bible says about their authority.
- They haven’t learned how to use the spiritual weapons God gave them.
- They allow sin or unbelief to stay in their lives.
But Jesus said, “I have given you power to walk on snakes and scorpions and over all the power of the enemy; nothing will harm you” (Luke 10:19).
When we know who we are in Christ, we stop fighting for victory, we start fighting from victory. Jesus already won; our job is to believe it and live it out.
Q3. Did God really give us authority over the devil?
Yes, completely!
In Mark 16:17–18, Jesus said that believers would cast out demons, heal the sick, and do mighty works in His name. Every follower of Jesus has been given spiritual authority through Him.
Think of it this way: Jesus is the King, and we are His ambassadors. We represent Him on earth. But authority only works when we use it.
Some things that stop believers from using their authority are:
- Fear or doubt
- Unrepentant sin
- Not knowing or believing what God says
- Being spiritually passive
God’s plan has always been to work through His people. The Bible says, “You are My battle axe and weapon of war”(Jeremiah 51:20).
That means God wants to bring victory through you; your prayers, your faith, and your obedience.
Q4. If God can do everything, why doesn’t He just do it Himself?
That’s a great question! God can do anything but He chooses to work with us, not without us.
From the very beginning, God said, “Let us make man in our image, and let them have dominion over the earth” (Genesis 1:26). That means He gave humans responsibility and authority to rule and take care of the world.
God’s plan has always been partnership. He gave His Spirit to believers so that, together with Him, we could bring light, love, and truth into the world.
When the Church forgets this calling, it becomes weak. But when believers walk in obedience and faith, we show the world what God’s kingdom looks like.
God hasn’t changed His plan. He still wants to work through His children, you and me to bring His will to earth.
Q5. So what should believers be doing right now?
Jesus made it clear: “As the Father has sent Me, I am sending you” (John 17:18).
That means we’re supposed to continue His mission to share the good news, heal the broken-hearted, help others find freedom, and show God’s love wherever we go.
Jesus also said in Matthew 12:29 that before you can take something from a strong man’s house, you must first tie him up. In other words, we must first stand against the enemy and his lies before we can help others be free.
The Bible gives us a beautiful picture of this in 2 Timothy 2:24–26:
“The servant of the Lord must not argue but be gentle, able to teach, and patient… so that those who are trapped by the devil may come to their senses and escape.”
We’re not meant to just watch life go by. We are called to walk in the victory Jesus gave us, help others find freedom, and live in a way that brings glory to God.
Reflection & Action
Take a few quiet moments and ask yourself:
- Do I really believe Jesus gave me authority and victory over the enemy?
- Am I using that authority, or am I letting fear and doubt control me?
- Who around me might need the freedom and love that Jesus offers and how can I share it with them this week?
Let’s pray together:
“Lord Jesus, thank You for coming to destroy the works of the devil and to give me new life.
Help me understand who I am in You and to walk in the authority You’ve given me.
Teach me to stand firm in faith, live in Your victory, and help others find the freedom You offer.
In Your name, I pray. Amen.”
