Breaking Free from Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD): Beyond Medication to True Liberation

For millions of people living with ADHD, the daily struggle feels like being trapped in a mind that won’t cooperate. Racing thoughts, inability to focus, impulsive decisions, and overwhelming distractibility create a prison of frustration that affects every aspect of life from relationships and career success to self-esteem and spiritual growth.

Traditional approaches often focus solely on managing symptoms through medication and behavioral strategies, but what if ADHD represents something deeper? What if the hyperactive mind, the inability to concentrate, and the constant internal chaos are symptoms of a spiritual battle that requires more than just pharmaceutical intervention?

Many believers with ADHD find themselves caught in a particularly challenging cycle. The very symptoms that make daily functioning difficult also interfere with prayer, Bible study, and spiritual disciplines. The racing mind that can’t settle long enough to focus on Scripture, the impulsivity that leads to repeated mistakes and regret, and the emotional dysregulation that strains relationships, all of these create barriers to the spiritual growth and freedom that could actually provide the deepest healing.

Yet countless individuals have discovered that true breakthrough comes when they address ADHD not just as a neurological condition, but as part of a comprehensive approach to spiritual, mental, and physical wellness. When we understand that our minds are battlegrounds where spiritual forces compete for control, we can begin to fight for our freedom using both earthly wisdom and heavenly weapons.

The journey to breaking free from ADHD’s limitations isn’t about denying the reality of neurological differences or abandoning helpful treatments. Instead, it’s about recognizing that lasting transformation requires addressing the whole person; spirit, soul, and body and refusing to accept that chaos and confusion must define our lives.

Freedom is possible, but it requires both divine intervention and our active participation in the healing process.

What is ADHD?

It is commonly defined as a childhood – onset neural developmental condition characterized by a persistent impulsivity that interferes with functioning or development.  It often carries on into adulthood. 65% of children diagnosed, often takes it to adulthood.

The 3 Dominant Types of ADHD:

The current diagnostic manual recognizes three primary presentations of ADHD, each with distinct characteristics and challenges.

1. Predominantly Inattentive Type (ADHD-I)

This type is characterized by significant difficulties with focus and organization while having few or no hyperactivity symptoms. People with inattentive ADHD make careless mistakes because they have difficulty sustaining attention.  They struggle to complete tasks, follow through on instructions, and maintain organization in their daily lives. This presentation often goes undiagnosed, particularly in girls and women, because the symptoms are less disruptive and more internalized.

Individuals with this type may appear daydreamy, forgetful, and easily distracted. They lose important items frequently, have trouble listening when spoken to directly, and avoid tasks requiring sustained mental effort. Their minds wander during conversations, and they often seem to be “somewhere else” even when physically present.

In essence: Difficulty paying attention, forgetful, easily distracted.

2. Predominantly Hyperactive-Impulsive Type (ADHD-H)

People with hyperactive ADHD feel the need for constant movement. They often fidget, squirm, and struggle to stay seated. Children often appear to act as if “driven by a motor” and run around excessively.  This involves difficulty sitting still or having “quiet time.” You have excess energy and are extremely talkative.

This type is more recognizable and frequently diagnosed, especially in children and males. These individuals interrupt others, blurt out answers before questions are completed, and struggle with impulse control. They have difficulty waiting their turn, often intrude on others’ activities, and may engage in risky behaviors without considering consequences.

In essence: impulsive type: frigidity, talkative, impatient behavior.

3. Combined Type (ADHD-C)

You may be diagnosed with combined type ADHD if you experience both symptoms of inattention and hyperactivity or impulsivity. These include lack of focus, restlessness, poor memory, and being unable to wait your turn.  ADHD Combined Type: A Common and Treatable Diagnosis – ADDA – Attention Deficit Disorder Association. This is the most comprehensive presentation, where individuals experience significant symptoms from both the inattentive and hyperactive-impulsive categories.

Combined type often represents the most challenging form of ADHD because it creates difficulties across multiple areas of functioning simultaneously. These individuals face the double burden of being unable to focus while also struggling with impulse control and hyperactivity.

Understanding which type dominates your experience is crucial for developing an effective approach to breaking free from ADHD’s limitations, as each presentation may require different strategies for achieving freedom and restoration.

The exact cause of ADHD is still unknown medically, however, factors like:  Low birth weight, delivery complications and exposure to toxins have been identified as potential contributors. The biggest factor is genetic (75 – 90% chance of getting this disorder if a member of the family has it).

ADHD is not recognized as one of the most common psychiatric diagnoses in others with a prevalence of approximately 5% in US – approximately 10 million diagnosed adults.  ADHD symptoms often look different in adults than children.  Sometimes ADHD symptoms are overlooked in childhood leading to miss- diagnosis. Knowing what symptoms to look for in adulthood is a key factor.

ADHD can impact men and women differently. The severity of hyperactivity impulsive symptoms tends to be low in women more than in men. In men you see fidgety, restlessness or risk-taking. In woman however more signs of inattention can be harder to spot. Woman with ADHD symptoms are more likely to report depreciative symptoms: anxiety, stress and low self-esteem which have similar symptoms to ADHD. ADHD in women can also be seen in common coexisting disorders that can delay or confuse diagnosis, or involuntary actions, anxiety, substance abuse and eating disorders.

ADHD impacts executive function – this includes control over your working memory, your ability to self-monitor, self-control and manage your time.

ADHD usually includes a wider spectrum of emotional dysregulation and functional impairment.  Dysregulation, a term often used to describe an inability to regulate emotions and the responses to those emotions. Emotional dysregulation can involve mood swings or severe depression and lead to higher risk behavior or impulsivity. Functional impairment a term used to describe having a hard time performing everyday activities or difficulty working or keeping a job because of symptoms.

Untreated ADHD can lead to frequent job changes / loss of employment, productivity issues, disorganization, low income, low motivation to engage and follow up on important tasks. Some common symptoms include problems maintaining social relationships, marital problems, increase risky behavior, low self-esteem, increased anti -social acts, introversion:  poor mixer/ not outgoing, greater risk of substance abuse, suicide risk and psychological and mood disturbances.

ADHD – A Biblical Perspective

As experienced by pastor Henry Wright in his writings, A More Excellent Way (pg. 84, 118). There are three dominant types of ADHD: 1.  Low range 2.  Midrange and 3. High range.

He believes that the primary spirits are “deaf and dumb” spirits.  Jesus casted out a “deaf and dumb” spirits in Matthew 11:5, Mark 7:32, 37; Mach 9:25.

The concept of deaf and dumb spirits is rooted directly in Scripture, particularly the account in Mark 9:14-29 where Jesus encounters a boy possessed by what He specifically identifies as “a deaf and mute spirit”. In this passage, Jesus gave the vile spirit its marching orders: “Dumb and deaf spirit, I command you out of him and stay out!”

This biblical account demonstrates that Jesus recognized specific types of spiritual entities that have particular characteristics and effects on their victims. The spirit was not merely causing physical symptoms.  it was a distinct spiritual entity with defined attributes of deafness and muteness.

Manifestations and Effects

According to Wright’s teachings, deaf and dumb spirits don’t only cause literal deafness or inability to speak. The deaf and dumb spirit also causes other issues like unbelief and stupidness, but believed they were the cause of ADHD and ADDA.

The Enemy’s Strategy

The strategic nature of deaf and dumb spirits becomes clear when we understand their purpose: to prevent effective communication between God and His people, and to hinder the proclamation of His truth. These spirits work to:

  • Block spiritual hearing and understanding
  • Create confusion in communication
  • Hinder the ability to receive and declare God’s Word
  • Foster unbelief through repeated communication failures
  • Prevent clear testimony and witness for Christ

Spiritual Roots and Entry Points

Pastor Wright’s approach emphasized identifying how these spirits gain access. Potential entry points include:

Generational Patterns:

  • Family histories of communication disorders
  • Generational patterns of spiritual deafness or rejection of God’s Word
  • Ancestral involvement in false religions or occult practices

Trauma and Rejection:

  • Early childhood trauma affecting communication development
  • Rejection or abuse that creates spiritual wounds
  • Experiences that caused someone to “shut down” emotionally or spiritually

Environmental Factors:

  • Exposure to false teaching or spiritual confusion
  • Environments where God’s Word is consistently rejected or mocked
  • Lack of proper spiritual covering and protection

Breaking Free from Deaf and Dumb Spirits

Wright’s approach to deliverance from these spirits involved comprehensive spiritual warfare combined with practical steps, including:

Direct Confrontation: Following Jesus’ example in Mark 9:25, specifically commanding the deaf and dumb spirit to come out and never return.

Addressing Root Causes:

  • Breaking generational curses affecting communication
  • Healing emotional and spiritual wounds that created entry points
  • Dealing with unforgiveness, bitterness, and rejection

Renewing the Mind:

  • Replacing lie with biblical truth about identity and communication
  • Developing new patterns of thinking and speaking
  • Learning to hear and respond to God’s voice

Practical Steps:

  • Creating environments that support clear communication
  • Practicing spiritual disciplines like prayer and Bible study
  • Building supportive relationships that encourage growth

The Hope of Complete Freedom

With God all things are possible, and this includes complete freedom from deaf and dumb spirits such as ADHD and ADDA. Many have experienced dramatic breakthrough when these spirits are properly identified and cast out, often resulting in:

  • Immediate or gradual improvement in hearing or speech
  • Sudden ability to understand spiritual truths previously unclear
  • Enhanced ability to pray, worship, and communicate with God
  • Freedom from learning disabilities or communication disorders
  • Restoration of confidence in communication abilities

Key Principles for Deliverance

The revelation that Pastor Henry Wright brought regarding deaf and dumb spirits has helped countless individuals understand that their communication struggles may have spiritual roots requiring spiritual solutions. This understanding opens the door to breakthrough that medical or educational interventions alone might not provide, offering hope for complete restoration of God’s gift of clear communication and spiritual hearing.

Psychologists say many of our personality disorders / characteristics including anger, rage, predispositions to mental disorders and certain diseases can be found in humans without any genetic component, but it can be inherited. There is not a genetic or a defective gene that has been isolated, but the condition is still passed on in families.  Reconsider those situations to be inherited familiar spirits, that follow families to create various breakdowns in the psychic or the soul. Dorman deaf spirits rule over the second heavens and try to control the minds of men.

Remember your mind, spirit, soul and body are the Lord’s.

Your body is the Temple of the Holy Spirit.

You belong to the Lord and the enemy of your life, Satan, wants to rule over your ‘thought life’. The devil can’t read your thoughts, that would make him omniscient, and he is not. His evil Kingdom can project thoughts into your head, out of the realm of the spirit, what you do with those thoughts is up to you.

2 Corinthians 10:3 – 5 says we are to bring every thought into captivity – casting down every imagination and bring every thought to the obedience of Christ.

Your mind is subjected to your thoughts, to the highest level, at all times.

God’s ways, are always higher than man’s thoughts and ways and his thoughts are forever higher than mans, Isaiah 55:8

The foolishness of God is wiser than man; and the weakness of God is stronger than men, 1Corinthians 1:25. That means we have a long way to go.

My mind is renewed by the washing of the water of the word, Ephesians 4:23; 5:26 and I have to bring every thought captive to the knowledge of God, 2 Corinthians 10: 3 – 5.

2 Timothy 1:7, God has not given us a spirit of fear but of Love, power and a sound mind. Our goal should be to gain power, love and a sound mind – all to be found in Christ.

Real Testimonies:

Testimony 1:

Pastor Right simply prayed, in the name of Jesus Christ, you spirit of scoliosis come out of him now, I break your power in the name of Jesus Christ. After that he laid his hands on him and commanded the spine to straighten up in Jesus name and it was done. Amen

Testimony 2:

Biblical case in Matthew 17: 14 – 21.

Pastor White’s staff said when they were confronted with this case that we should go and pray and fast for 3 days.  However, he advised them that he was already prayed up and told them that this woman could die in three days, there was no time to waste. He said today is the day of salvation –now is the appointed time. He operated by faith. This woman that came for prayer for epilepsy was unsaved – she had two abortions – – he spoke to her about her issues. He told her if she accepted the lord, the chances of him healing her would be much greater. She accepted the advice.

He prayed for her.  He broke the spirit of the deaf and dumb spirit and cast it out of her and commanded the spirit of epilepsy to be gone.

Not all people get immediate healing, pastor Wright advises.  In these cases, the Lord identifies the presence of spiritual roots of disease and spiritual blocks to healing.

God will not compromise on refusal of a change of heart.

He needs to see us make a decision to change our sinful ways and then he will step in. He would not be faithful to allow us to keep our sin, and He bless us with healing. That is inconsistent with his principled way of operating.

However, he is known to heal people who did not qualify but this is entirely due to his sovereignty, he can do whatsoever he desires to do, and the sovereign will of his should be recognized, Romans 9:15.

Sometime the Lord will heal people immediately and then straighten them out after.  As a general rule, the Lord is first interested in our sanctification as a prerequisite to our healing and deliverance.
