Your Speech Reveals the Spiritual Condition of Your Heart
Matthew 12:34–37
Jesus teaches that our words are like a mirror, they reveal what’s truly in our hearts. When the Pharisees accused Jesus of casting out demons by Satan’s power, they revealed the corruption within their hearts. Jesus makes it clear: our speech flows from what’s inside us; a corrupt heart cannot produce pure words.
1. The Heart Dictates Speech
“O generation of vipers, how can ye, being evil, speak good things? for out of the abundance of the heart the mouth speaketh.” (Matthew 12:34)
Our words are not random. They are the overflow of what fills the heart.
If your heart is full of anger, your words will sting. If it’s full of love, your speech will bring healing and peace.
Imagine your heart as a clear glass of water. When that water is pure, you can see straight through it, it refreshes, cleanses, and gives life to those who drink it. But if the water is muddy and polluted, no one would want to drink it. It doesn’t matter if you pour it into a fancy cup or add ice, the water is still filthy.
In the same way, your speech reveals whether your heart is spiritually clean or contaminated. If you want your words to be clear and life-giving, you first need God to cleanse your heart. Outward filters (like trying to “watch what you say”) can help for a while but only a cleansed heart produces truly pure speech. Genuine purity of speech comes when God cleanses the inside through repentance, renewal, healing, and deliverance from bitterness, trauma, and spiritual oppression.
Real Example:
Think of a married couple going through separation. Emotions run high. Words are flying back and forth, accusations, blame, rejection. One begins saying, “I never loved you,” after five years of marriage. Do the words alone define truth? Or do they come from a lifetime clouded by hurt, disappointment, anger, or unmet expectations? Do they come from a deeper pain? Often, they are echoes of a wounded, unhealed heart; one carrying disappointment, rejection, or past trauma.
Those words, though sharp, may reveal a wounded heart, not necessarily the absence of love. When our inner life is flooded with pain, our words carry that pain. Without healing and deliverance from God, we end up speaking mud instead of water; words that wound instead of restore. When the heart is cleansed and surrendered, even difficult conversations can be marked by peace rather than bitterness.
2. The Storehouse of the Heart
“A good man out of the good treasure of the heart bringeth forth good things: and an evil man out of the evil treasure bringeth forth evil things.” (Matthew 12:35)
Our hearts are like storage rooms. Whatever we store — truth or lies, love or hate — will eventually come out through our words.
If we fill our hearts with the Word of God, with gratitude and mercy, our speech will reflect it. But filling it with bitterness or self-pity will poison every word.
If your pantry is filled with junk food, that’s what you’ll eat. If it’s filled with nourishing food, that’s what you can serve. When we fill our hearts with Scripture, prayer, and godly thoughts, our speech naturally becomes wholesome and encouraging. You can’t serve a healthy meal from a pantry full of decay. Stock your heart with the things of God; His promises, His wisdom, His truth and your words will nourish others.
3. Words Have Consequences
“But I say unto you, That every idle word that men shall speak, they shall give account thereof in the day of judgment.” (Matthew 12:36)
Every word matters to God, including those spoken in frustration or carelessness. Idle and hurtful words may wound others deeply and dishonors God, requiring repentance and even inner healing to repair what’s been broken.
Think of words as seeds. Once they leave your mouth, you can’t take them back; they will take root somewhere, either producing blessing or harm. Choose your seeds carefully.
4. Our Words Will Testify for or Against Us
“For by thy words thou shalt be justified, and by thy words thou shalt be condemned.” (Matthew 12:37)
Our speech will serve as evidence of what truly lives within us. Words of truth, peace, and grace reveal a heart transformed by Christ. Bitter, deceitful, or prideful speech exposes the opposite.
Your words are like your signature; they authenticate who you really are. You can sign your name a thousand times, but the real pattern will always reveal your identity.
Reflection
- Self-examination: What does your speech reveal about your inner life? Are your words steering others toward peace or pain?
- Accountability: Remember, every idle or joking word still matters to God.
- Healing and Deliverance: Ask the Holy Spirit to cleanse your heart from past wounds, bitterness, and spiritual bondage so that your speech may reflect freedom.
- Restoration & Transformation: Remember that God not only forgives but also heals. He can deliver your heart from anything that keeps your words bound in anger or fear.
“For in him we live, and move, and have our being.” (Acts 17:28)
Christ is the source of life and the purifier of our hearts. Let every conversation at home, work, or anywhere, carry a reflection of His grace and truth. When we invite Him to cleanse, heal, and deliver our hearts, our words become rivers of living water bringing life, not destruction, to those who hear us.
